First Friday Requirements

The First Friday Devotion, revealed by Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, is a specific Catholic practice with several key requirements that must be met to receive the promised graces.

Receive Holy Communion. You must receive the Eucharist during Mass on each of the nine consecutive First Fridays. This is the central act of the devotion.

Be in a State of Grace. This means you must have confessed any mortal sins before receiving Communion. While confession on the same day is ideal, it is generally accepted that Confession can be made within eight days before or after the First Friday.

Have the Intention of Reparation. The devotion is performed in honor of and in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. You should have the explicit intention of making amends for the ingratitude and sins committed against Jesus.

*If one of the nine consecutive months is missed, the devotion must be started over from the beginning.
